Kitesurfing and wing foiling in Thailand: All you need to know!

Why learn kitesurfing or wing foiling in thailand?

Awesome weather and beautiful views

Thailand has warm, tropical weather, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home! With average temperatures around 30°C, it’s perfect for kitesurfing and wing foiling. Plus, the beaches are stunning, with clear blue waters and sandy shores. Learning in such a gorgeous setting makes the experience even more fun.

Lovely people

Thai people are some of the friendliest and most welcoming folks you'll meet. They love meeting foreigners and always greet you with a smile. This warm vibe is also what you’ll find in the kitesurfing and wing foiling community. The laid-back attitude and friendly atmosphere help you feel right at home, making your first kite or wingfoil experience truly awesome.

Many schools

You’ll find plenty of schools offering kitesurf and wingfoil lessons at great prices, most with experienced instructors. Compared to Europe and other parts of the world the prices are on the low end. Just make sure to choose a school that’s IKO or IWO certified like KITEFLIP Wing Foil Center. They also have European instructors who speak multiple languages, making communication a breeze.

Best kite and wingfoil spots in Thailand

Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is a lively island in the southern gulf of Thailand, famous for its chill backpacker vibes, wild parties, and a cool, hippy lifestyle. But there's more to this paradise than meets the eye—it's also a fantastic place for kitesurfing and wing foiling!

If you're into kitesurfing or wing foiling, head to the south coast of Koh Phangan, around Baan Tai and Tong Sala. Here, you'll find a huge shallow lagoon protected by a reef, making it perfect for learning and practicing both sports. The water is flat and calm, ideal for beginners trying to get the hang of things. When the tide is high, the lagoon is perfect for wing foiling where you can practice in chest-deep water. At low tide the water is knee to waist deep which makes it ideal to learn kitesurfing. During this time it’s best to go over the reef into the deep water to wing foil.

Koh Phangan has two main windy seasons that are great for both kitesurfing and wing foiling. The first season, from January to April or May, brings steady southeast winds between 10 and 20 knots—perfect for learning and improving your skills. February and March are the best months, with most days offering good wind and awesome weather.

The second windy season runs from July to October, with southwest winds that sometimes bring rain and stronger gusts. This is the time for advanced riders to have some real fun, catching big air or riding waves. But be ready for the rainy months from mid-October to mid-December, when the wind slows down and the island gets pretty wet.

December is the only month when the wind comes from the north. That’s when everyone heads to Chaloklum, on the north side of the island. It’s the go-to spot for all the schools and riders so it can get pretty busy, especially since it’s a small bay with limited space.

If you're excited to try kitesurfing or wing foiling on Koh Phangan, you can find lessons and rentals at KITEFLIP Kite & Wing foil Center

Phuket

Phuket, Thailand's biggest island, located in the southwest along the Andaman Sea, is famous for its luxury resorts, vibrant nightlife, and incredible water sports. Whether you're into kitesurfing or wing foiling, Phuket has some awesome spots for you!

First, let's talk about Nai Yang, a cozy little area in the north, just a five-minute drive from the airport. Nai Yang is great for both kitesurfing and wing foiling, especially from May to October. This small bay offers shallow waters that are perfect for beginners, while more experienced riders can enjoy some waves. However, be prepared for the wind to be a bit unpredictable, often followed by rain—especially in May and September, the wettest months. If you're chasing big waves for wing foiling, don’t miss Kata Beach during this season; it’s got some of the cleanest waves in Thailand, perfect for prone foiling!

Next up is Rawai Beach in Chalong Bay, located on Phuket's southeast coast. This spot is ideal for kitesurfing and wing foiling from November to March. The waters here are a mix of flat and choppy, with reliable thermal winds that are best in the mornings. Rawai also has a handy floating base for wing foiling when the wind comes from the west. Plus, nearby Nai Harn Beach and Ao Sane Beach are also great for wing foiling during this time of year.

Both Nai Yang and Rawai Beach have schools where you can take lessons and rent gear, making them perfect for kitesurfers and wing foilers of all levels. So whether you're looking to ride the waves or glide across flat waters, Phuket has you covered!

Huahin

Hua Hin, just 200 km south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand, is a top holiday spot for Thai high society, and it’s not as crowded with tourists as other places in Thailand. With a stunning 6 km long sandy beach, Hua Hin is a hot spot for both kitesurfing and wing foiling!

There are at least ten kite schools and five wing foil schools offering lessons and gear rentals, making Hua Hin the busiest and most popular spot in Thailand for both sports. Even with all the action, there’s still plenty of space to ride and have fun.  The water gradually gets deeper as you head out to sea which is good for  wing foiling. Unfortunately it can also get pretty choppy which is not the easiest to learn kitesurfing. The choppy waves are also not quite big enough for prone surfing.

The prime time to hit the water in Hua Hin is from November to March. During these months, the northeast winds blow 75% of the time, with speeds ranging from 8 to 20 knots—perfect for both kitesurfing and wing foiling. April cranks up the heat, often bringing some of the best thermal winds in Thailand, making it an exciting time for all riders.

From May to mid-October, the southwest monsoon rolls in, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, sometimes up to 30 knots. The rainiest months are May, August, and September, but the strong winds can make for thrilling rides, especially for more experienced riders.

Hua Hin is also famous for hosting wing foiling events and kitesurfing competitions, including the PKRA World Tour, where top riders from around the world showcase their skills in freestyle and racing. These events are a fantastic way to meet fellow foilers and kitesurfers and witness some incredible performances.
